Objective of the Initiative

  • The Coffee Board has launched GI-tagged single-serve drip coffee bags to promote coffee consumption across India.
  • The initiative aims to make specialty Indian coffee varieties more accessible to consumers.

Varieties of GI-Tagged Coffee

Each drip bag pouch includes five Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Arabica coffee varieties:

  1. Coorg Arabica – Grown in the Western Ghats, known for its balanced flavor.
  2. Chikmagalur Arabica – A well-known variety with a smooth and rich taste.
  3. Bababudangiri Arabica – Originating from the historic coffee region in Karnataka.
  4. Araku Valley Arabica – Produced by tribal farmers in Andhra Pradesh, known for its organic cultivation.
  5. Monsooned Malabar Arabica – A unique monsoon-aged coffee that develops distinctive flavors due to exposure to rain and winds.

Availability and Accessibility

  • The drip coffee bags will be available on all major e-commerce platforms, making high-quality GI coffee more accessible across India.
  • The goal is to provide an easy brewing experience for consumers while preserving the authenticity of Indian coffee.

Additional Specialty Coffee Launches

  • Alongside drip bags, the Coffee Board introduced specialty coffees such as:
    • Monsooned Malabar – The world’s only monsoon-aged coffee, matured under controlled humidity.
    • Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold Arabica – A premium-grade coffee known for its large bean size and rich aroma.

Promotion of Coffee Culture

    • Conducting Kaapi Shastra workshops to educate consumers.
    • Organizing Barista Skills training programs for aspiring professionals.
    • Hosting domestic coffee exhibitions to showcase Indian coffee to global buyers.

Emerging Coffee Startups and Innovation

India’s Coffee Consumption and Future Prospects

  • India’s coffee consumption stands at 95,000 tonnes, according to industry reports.
  • The Coffee Board’s initiatives aim to support farmers and entrepreneurs, ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
